U.B.D.C POWER HOUSES, STAGE-I & II (91.35 MW)
Upper Bari Doab Canal Hydro Electric Project (UBDC) is located near Pathankot falling in the district of Gurdaspur in Punjab. The Power station is situated on the Upper Bari Doab Canal, which draws water from river Ravi for the dual purpose of Irrigation and Power generation. Water of river Ravi passes through Ranjit Sagar Dam at Thein before entering into UBDC Canal. At present, UBDC Project comprises of two stages of Hydro Power stations i.e. Stage-I and Stage-II. Stage-I Project consisting of three Power Houses namely I,II & III each having a generating unit of 15 MW was erected and commissioned during 1971-73. Stage –II of UBDC Project consisting of three additional Power Houses namely I,II&III each having a generating unit of 15.45 MW was erected and commissioned during 1989-92. As such UBDC Hydro Electric Project has a total installed capacity of 91.35 MW.

P.S.E.B has incurred an expenditure of 17.41 crores through Pb. Irrigation department for re-modelling of escape channel at RD- 72720 to enhance its capacity from 1500 Cusses to 7200 Cusses. This work has been completed in 7/2004. This has enabled PSEB to have extra generation from UBDC PHs by enabling the inflow through the Hydel Channel during the lean period even when Irrigation Indent is Nil. This is evident with the generation of 217 MU during the current year from April to July. As such the total generation during the year 2005-2006 is likely to be about 450 MU.
A scheme for renovation and modernization of UBDC PHs during the 10th five year plan has been approved by the Board costing to Rs.789/-lac. An amount of Appx.Rs.150 lac has been already spent. This will help in smooth running of the generating units by replacement of the old and worn out equipment.
Residual life Assessment of UBDC PHs Stage-I, having completing more than 30 years, has since been got carried out from M/S BHEL. Recommendations of RLA Studies is under consideration and after implementation, the life of Stage-I PHs shall be enhanced considerably.
